Built in the 5th century under Theodosius II, the walls run for about 6.5 km from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn. They were breached in 1453 during the siege by Sultan Mehmed II. Restored sections can be explored around Edirnekapı and Topkapı.
Tip
Wear comfortable shoes and avoid deserted stretches after dark.
